Personal Injury Protection

No-Fault Reform
Michigan,
Effective 7.2.2020

summarizing our stance:

Keep your UNLIMITED benefits, AT LEAST until we get far enough along to see how lowering limits will affect you

substantiating our stance:

HEALTH INSURERS ARE SAYING...

""While saving money on auto insurance may be appealing, it is important to remember that PIP may cover benefits not covered by your health insurance, such as lost wages, attendant care, and modifications to your vehicle or home. We encourage you to discuss these options with your auto insurance agent to determine what level of coverage may be appropriate for you."

Disclaimer: Please be aware that if you change employers, you will need to re-evaluate how your new medical coverage coordinates with your auto insurance. --> Not doing so could leave you entirely uncovered

You may save $10's or potentially $100's by lowering your limits, but in doing so, lose hundreds of thousands of dollars in coverage. -> Is it really worth it?

DEFINED:

A set of 3 coverages:
  1. Medical: Coverage up to policy limits (unlimited, if you choose that option) for claims with medical expenses for your care, recovery and rehab. This includes products, services and accommodations resulting from your accident. Funeral and burial expenses are also covered.
  2. Lost Wages: Coverage for up to 85% of your lost wages due to your accident for 3 years max.
  3. Replacement Services: $20 per day for tasks the injured can no longer perform

All the details:

The change is all about the  medical coverage...

before:

options of limits

  1. Unlimited

after:

options of limits

  1. Unlimited
  2. $500,000
  3. $250,000
  4. $250,000 excluding some/all drivers*
  5. $50,000 (Medicaid option)*
  6. Medicare Opt Out*

*Requires a form of qualified health coverageverification to select these options - Click on the option for requirements.

Now, each policy holder has to sign and return documents each renewal or you will default to Unlimited

where does coverage come from?

  1. Your Policy
  2. Your Spouse’s Policy
  3. Resident Relative's Policy
  4. Owner of the Vehicle's Policy
  5. Operator of the Vehicle's Policy
  6. Michigan Assigned Claims Plan (MACP)

WHERE DOES COVERAGE COME FROM?

  1. Your Policy
  2. Your Spouse's Policy
  3. Resident Relative's Policy
  4. Michigan Assigned Claims Plan (MACP) - $250,000 limit (effective 7-2-20)

Options 4 & 5 of the old order cut out, leaving people on your policy who are not relatives, or no longer residents with far less coverage than before

Where does coverage come from for Motorcyclists?

  1. Owner of Car's Policy
  2. Operator of Car's Policy
  3. The Motorcyclist's Personal Auto Policy
  4. Michigan Assigned Claims Plan (MACP) - $250,000 limit

The problem here: The motorcyclist is stuck with whatever the owner or operator of the car picked. Even if the MC operator had better, limits, he/she is stuck with only the other party's limits. In other words, pick the maximum in Med Pay or Med Benefits when available.
